Plains of Sonora

The Plains of Sonora are located in central Sonora. The landscape consists of broad valleys and widely scattered hills. This area receives more rainfall than other areas in the desert and is densely vegetated. The Plains of Sonora are very similar to the the Arizona Uplands and can also be classified as thornscrub. Key plants in the region include mesquites, organ pipe cacti, senita cacti, foothill palo verde, ironwoods. The Plains of Sonora are home to animals such as the Sonoran Pronghorn. Unfortunately, most of this region has been converted to agriculture, destroying the habitats of native species. Other conservation issues facing the region include over-hunting, illegal cacti trade, and pollution.
